How Are We Going to Store Our New Bikes???

Coming up with a storage solution for our bikes was a bit tricky. We have a bike rack for the Jeep to transport them but didn’t feel comfortable leaving them on it full time, even if we did lock everything up.

We really wanted them to be stored indoors and taking the apart to store in a bay underneath the RV did not sound like a very efficient option.

We had planned on taking out the recliner chair and flip up desk anyways because we never used them and they were taking up valuable floor space. So we decided that mounting the bikes there would still open up the floor space a bit and solve our issue of keeping the bikes indoors.

Making the fork mount was a different problem we needed to tackle. We tried to buy a fork mount, but the axle pin wasn’t long enough and we couldn’t find a new pin that would fit. So we returned that to REI and committed to making our own.

We tossed around the idea of making it out of wood, but that was going to be a lot of drilling and cutting with no way of knowing if it would work or not.

While standing in the isles of The Home Depot tossing ideas back and forth Gerrit took one last swing and  Googled “bike fork mount.” And this time he came across this article.

FINALLY! A solution! We bought the parts and went to work.

We ended up having to make one modification and one more Home Depot trip but it was done, our bikes are stored safe and we had a fun afternoon figuring it out together. Also huge shout out to who ever came up with the idea to use pipe. You rock!

  1. The bikes have stayed really solid! However, the front tires have flopped around a few times scaring Oakley to death… So we need to think up a solution for that sometime soon.
