We were only able to spend the weekend in Escalante, Utah but we could spend a month there and not do all of the amazing things this area has to offer!
I think this is the most remote place we have ever taken the RV. The boondocking spot we found didn’t have great data signal, so I don’t think we could work from that spot. Regardless, we will be back.
Sense our time was limited we wanted to do something we have never done before. So we researched the slot canyons Peek-A-Boo and Spooky. We have been wanting to try canyoneering for a long time, so this is just a stepping stone towards that goal.
We started the 3 mile round trip hike pretty early in the morning, around 8:00AM. The first canyon Peek-A-Boo had quite a bit of water in it. About a foot in some places. It was too hard to monkey around the water so, we just ended up walking through it in our shoes and socks. Which wasn’t so bad after you just did it.
We had a blast going up that first canyon! So many things to climb around on and through. It did get a bit narrow in spots. But nothing like what was about to come in Spooky!
Once we finished the first one we followed some carns (AKA stacked rocks) for a while but we felt like we were going too far out of our way so Gerrit pulled up the trial map on his phone and we found our way towards the second canyon.
Spooky was SO much fun! It wasn’t quite as wet as the previous and as the day went on more people were beginning their hike. We crossed paths with a few people going the opposite direction through the canyon. It did get a bit tricky to pass one another at times. This one got REALLY tight. Like suck in your gut, hold your breath narrow. There was just one section that Gerrit and I both got a little claustrophobic, but it didn’t last long. We didn’t feel unsafe one time during the entire experience. Being that canyons are open at the top and you are constantly moving, I think that helped a lot.
All and all we had a great time and can’t wait to do another slot canyon!
If you don’t follow us on YouTube already, make sure you do! I love our video on the slots, it was really fun to make, and you can see the beauty of the canyon better than our crappy phone pictures.
